The velvet underwear and Neko

Okay, the underwear was not velvet. But at the merch table at last night's Neko Case show, tour panties were being sold. They have a tiger on the front, and cost $15.

This was my first time seeing Neko Case, and I got to do it on home turf. Low Skies opened - I am not a fan. I think they played the same song ten times. The same slow song. Plus, the lead singer had this odd rhythmic dance he did while playing the guitar, which looked for all the world like a slower, more sultry version of the Monty Python gallop. Yikes.

But then Neko came on, and all was well. That woman has one amazing voice. I'm not super familiar with her catalog, but I enjoyed the entire set. Particular highlights for me were "Outro With Bees," "I Wish I Was the Moon," "Furnace Room Lullaby," and a cover of Dylan's "Buckets of Rain."

She's also funny. She was very friendly with the audience, commenting on such things as the real butter the Barrymore puts on its popcorn ("Of course; we're here in America's Dairyland!") and joking that her guitar player joined the band by stalking them ("You don't have to pay stalkers if they're in your band, because they just want to be there and hang out - plus, this way you always know where they are.")

All in all, a night well spent. Plus, sucker that I am, I bought a tour poster. It can join the ten or twelve that are also not yet hanging anywhere in my house.

Do you think Neko wears her own tour panties? I mean, if she runs out or something? Or does that violate some rule - like a band wearing their own t-shirt?

Excellent question. If they were underwear from a tour, say, ten years ago - vintage tour panties - then that would be considered cool and retro. But current tour panties? I don't know. Maybe sometimes necessary for quality control purposes.
