Finally, a GOOD Alpine Valley experience
Saturday night I saw Coldplay at Alpine Valley. Last time I was there, the evening was a bitter, bitter comedy of errors. Gina and I were hoping to fare better this time. We left around 3:45, aiming to get a decent parking spot in the Giant Field of NeverGettingOut and meander inside around gate-opening time.
I can't say I was super excited going into this show. I was already a bit prejudiced against Alpine Valley (see above) and I'm none too fond of the most recent Coldplay album. But I'd scored 2 pit tickets (rather lackadaisically, to tell you the truth), so Gina and I decided we were up for it. We waited in a long line for our turn to filter through the gates, and then spent about 5 minutes trying to figure out where the hell the pit wristbands were being distributed. We finally got them, managed not to tumble headlong down the steep hill, and got some very nice second row spots a little left of center stage.
Rilo Kiley opened the show, and I'm sorry to say I didn't enjoy them much. I liked the album I heard in Paul's car (which was the sum total of my Rilo Kiley experience before Saturday) but frankly they bored me live. I'm sure it didn't help that the sound was extremely muddy up front for the opening band, and a lot of people were talking. Jenny Lewis was wearing some nice checkered canvas shoes, though.
After the thrill of watching some venue lighting folks ascend the scary rope ladders to the top of the pavillion, Coldplay took the stage. Immediately, I was reminded of the key factor I'd forgotten in the two years since I saw Coldplay live: Chris Martin is a joy to watch onstage. He's like a big overgrown kid who's incredibly excited about everything. (A big, overgrown, flexible kid.) And his bandmates are quite adorable too. I don't mean that in a "hot" way (though Guy Berryman fits the bill) but much more innocently. Shy grins and goofy interactions all around.
They played about five songs from A Rush of Blood to the Head, and a couple of songs from Parachutes (there were balloons and confetti during "Yellow" ... and they were all yellow), and a lot of songs from X&Y. I liked most of them better live than I did on the album (and really, if people can't say that about many of your songs, you should stop touring) although I admit to tapping my feet and checking my watch through one or two. But Chris was engaging no matter what. He took the cell phone of the girl in front of us and sang into it for awhile during one of my less preferred songs, which was great because it totally distracted me from not liking it.
My favorite part of the show was when a sort of poor man's B-stage was set up directly at the front, with a keyboard for Will the drummer. An acoustic mini-set followed, beginning with the only song I legitimately really like on X&Y - "Til Kingdom Come". Apparently it was written for Johnny Cash, though he never got to sing it. Then they launched into "Ring of Fire," making Coldplay the fourth band I've now seen cover that song live.
When the show was over, we slowly hiked our way back out of the valley, found our parking lot and my car with little trouble, sucked down some water, lamented our lack of dinner, and then sat back and chilled for about AN HOUR AND FIFTEEN MINUTES before any car around us even started moving toward the exit. Mmmm. Still, it was a good night.

Sounds like you had a good time! A group of my friends went and they said it took almost 3hrs for them to just get out of the parking lot. So concider yourself lucky that you only had an hr and fifteen wait!
Wow, I guess we were lucky, then. Next time I should just bring a grill or something.
That would be hilarious. You could open your own business while your at it. Sell hot dogs for $3.00 to other people out there waiting!
Some guys WERE selling bottles of cold water after the show! They were dragging a cooler around the parking lot. It was much more reasonable than the price of water inside, too. I think you're onto something...
Hey Brianne - it's Wendy from the Wilco forum ... HI!
I just had to say your Coldplay review is spot-on accurate. I took my 3 teenage nieces to the Indy Verizon Amphitheater show last Friday night, and they thought it was the best show they'd ever seen (and it probably was given that they've seen so few shows in their short lives). I also loved the Johnny Cash tribute, very nice.
I recommend "premiere parking" at those gigantic shows (we had 17,000 attend) which lets you park close to the door, and lets you out first. Best 20 bucks I've ever spent! :D But I'm an old lady at this point. Soon I'll be in the 50+ demographics. :(
Hey Wendy! How were your seats in Indy? I'm glad to hear your nieces had such a good time. :) It'll be fun when my niece is old enough for me to take her a concert. She's 10 now, but I think she'd enjoy it more if she were older. Not sure if I'll be doing another giant amphitheatre show anytime soon, though. If I do, though, I think you're right about the premiere parking. Everybody knows they're in for it at Alpine Valley, so it's not super stressful, but I could have been home twice in the time it took to move.
We were in row 23, a bit off to the right side, so not bad at all considering. I have to ask you, though - did the venue play Coldplay songs on the PA inbetween acts? They did in Indy (two songs, as a matter of fact!) and that was odd and frankly a little bit tacky! Shame on them!!!
My nieces are so excited because I got four 8th row tickets for Death Cab For Cutie in Ann Arbor in October - they squealed when I told them! That's their favorite band, with Coldplay their 2nd favorite. It's the day after Wilco in Indy (you coming down for that?) so it should be a great week.
You'll love it when your 10-year-old niece is ready for shows. My sister will only allow them to travel for shows on Friday and Saturday nights, so luckily the DCFC is on a Friday night.
Wendy, I had totally forgotten - but YES! They played at least one Coldplay song on the PA between acts! Which means that it must be something the Coldplay camp has dictated. Oh my lord, how embarrassing!
I don't think I'm going down to Indy for Wilco, but I will probably try the presale (if it's announced before it actually happens) juuust in case. ;-) Great job with the Death Cab seats, especially getting 4 at once.
How old are your nieces?
My nieces are 16, 16, and 14 (from two of my sisters). Neither of the 16-year-olds drive yet, which is amazing to me. That was the #1 thing I couldn't WAIT to do when I turned 16! But today driving is more difficult, many lanes of traffic to traverse, cities larger to navigate. Or that's what they tell me anyway (they're scared!) LOL
It's hard to believe Coldplay thinks it's a good idea to play their own songs before they come on. I'm wondering if it's a Clear Channel conspiracy! ;-) I'll bet their tour is Clear Channel, and these were Clear-Channel-owned venues. Ack! It's evil.
Well, I'm trying the Indy Ticketmaster on-sale tomorrow morning hoping to get better seats than I did at the presale. Wish me luck!
I have to finish reading your blog to see which concert you are attending in California! I'm assuming it's JB, but ... ??? Enjoy your trip!
