Mid-June

How did it get to be the middle of June already? I think I say that every year. But damn.

Anyway, awesome weekend. Great weather, fun, etc. I've come to the conclusion that staying in the same place all the time would slowly drive me nuts. Going somewhere for the weekend, or just a couple of days here and there ... whether it's Chicago, Ktown, somewhere more scenic ... it's something I love to do. I almost feel like it's something I need to do. This week I'll be in the Twin Cities on business, and that makes me happy, too. Changes of scenery, different people. If all of my friends and family lived in one city, I wonder what I would do. Well, that'll never happen.

I'd like to share with you a lovely poem from a fourth grade poetry collection of mine unearthed recently. The volume is entitled "Poems for Everything" and even has a table of contents. It's also illustrated, which means that really, I should have scanned the pages. But here is the first poem:

WHAT IS PURPLE?

Purple is the color of grapes on a vine
Purple is kings and queens looking divine

Purple is shirts, pants, socks and shoes
Purple is violets in morning dews.

Purple is the color of leaves on a hike
Purple is glue that teachers don't like

Purple's the color I like most of all
Purple's the color that never will fall.

I think rhyming "vine" with "divine" is kind of cheating. And where the hell was I hiking?

During my later elementary school tenure there was this big fad and accompanying crackdown on colored glue in school. Kids would mix Elmer's School Glue with a few drops of food coloring at home. I guess it was messy? I'm not sure what the big deal was. But purple was one of the popular banned colors.
